Vitamin D3 1000 I.E. Cholecalciferol 100 capsules
What is vitamin D3?
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is not a vitamin, but a prohormone that is formed primarily by ultraviolet light - that is, sunlight. About eighty per cent vitamin D3 develops through UV-B rays.
Why do we need vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) supplements?
Vitamin D3 is the active form of vitamin D. A conversion process transforms vitamin D in the kidney and the liver into D3. Vitamin D3 lasts for just a few days. If there is no sunlight an extended period of time, there will be shortages of Vitamin D.
What factors cause a vitamin D3 deficiency?
In Northern Europe there are only a few hours of sunshine in winter. As a result, vitamin D3 can not be formed in the body. Since there are only a few foods with a high vitamin D3 content, the demand can not be covered by the diet. Suppliers of vitamin D3 are, for example, salmon, herring, sardines, eels and tuna. In some mushrooms, eggs and veal, vitamin D3 is also found. However, an enormous amount of these foods would have to be consumed in order to meet the daily requirements. The main reason for a deficiency lies in the lack of sunlight. In winter, garments, shadows, clouds and windows prevent the formation of this vitamin. Furthermore, the following factors can cause shortcomings: A small stay outdoors promotes a vitamin D3 deficiency. Older persons are often affected by a shortage, as production reduces in old age. In menopause and in pregnancy, there are hormonal changes that can lead to a deficiency. Crohn's disease, liver disease and renal disease can block the vitamin intake. People with dark skin belong to the risk group when they live in countries where few hours of sunshine prevail. A dark skin color blocks the absorption of the UV-B rays.
